If you are looking for something out of the ordinary, or who need to match an unusual color, the process can be even more frustrating. An alternative is to make your own area rug and customize it for your home. Following simple steps will get you started with your own textured area rugs project.
Measure the room and decide on a mat size. Use a metal tape measure for precise measurements. Normally, area rugs are square or rectangular, but they can be any shape you want. Create a paper pattern. Creating a pattern is only necessary if you make a shaped rug.
The paper pattern will be your template to use when cutting the carpet material. Place the paper on the floor in the area where the carpet will be placed. Find and buy materials. Carpet remnants are easy to cut. Vinyl sheet flooring, jute and fabric can also be used. Textured area rugs for a living room or bedroom can be softer and not so tough.
Place cardboard or plywood on the floor and set the carpet material down on the protected surface. Cutting shape from the back of the material using a sharp knife or mat, in the case of a fabric with a sharp scissors. Tie the edges if necessary. Abrasion can occur over time when using carpet, jute or cloth. Use a contrasting fabric edging or wrapped stitch around the edges of a soft cloth mat.
